When I started blogging, I always heard about SEO, but I never knew what it was about or cared so much about it. This was in 2018. Two years later, I wrote a blog post out of boredom. This was during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown. You can read the blog post here.
Suddenly, my site started getting a surge in traffic. I was scared, and I wondered how and why. It turns out that this post that I wrote out of boredom was actually well-optimised for search engines. It looked like magic, but as I have come to learn in my five years of owning a blog, it isn’t. I was just not focusing on the tips and tricks for SEO.
SEO basically means “search engine optimization.” It allows your blog and your blog posts to climb to the top of SERPs, or Search Engine Result Pages. Being on the first page means your website stands a good chance of receiving a truckload of traffic. Being number 1 means you get the most traffic from that SERP—more than a truckload.
SEO is not limited to websites and blogs alone. Your YouTube channel needs SEO, your Pinterest account needs SEO, and your e-commerce store also needs SEO. The one advantage of SEO is that the competition is fair, unlike social media sites today. Get your site pages well-optimised, and you stand a chance of getting to number one. Whether your competitors started their website 20 years ago or have ruled the number one spot for over a decade, your new blog post has the chance to replace them once it is well-optimised.
How do you get your site pages optimised?
Here are some quick tips for doing so:
Write for the users.
Your blog post should target users’ search intent.
Do keyword research.
Make use of images.
Use alt texts in your images.
Make use of headings.
Properly craft your meta description.
Properly link your article to other posts, internally or externally.
Do not plagiarise.
Draft an articulate blog title.
There are so many other factors that have contributed to the growth of the blog post I mentioned earlier. But these ten tips will help you get started.
